Court fines Oxlade 5 million; Ikuforijimi Abdulrahman, popularly known as Oxlade has been fined

the sum of 5 million Naira charged by the Lagos state high court of justice for leaking an explicit sex

tape between him and a woman he met on Snapchat.

The sex tape involving the singer, and an online lady named Blessing went viral online on the 9th of

February 2022. Which later prompted the artist to apologize to his fans after the video sparked

controversial opinions online, and trended for a couple of days. Blessing on the other hand came out

lamenting she is having very serious issues with her family.

Justice O. A. Oresanya, while delivering the judgment on Tuesday 24, 2023, described

the singer’s act of secretly recording the explicit sex act and leaking the tape online was

“despicable, horrendous, distasteful, and classless”. Stating that an act of this nature requires

consent from both parties involved, not one party taking advantage of the situation to violate

the fundamental right of privacy, dignity, and freedom of the other.

The claimant in the person of Blessing, filed the suit on the  15th of March, 2022 demanding the sum

of N20 million in damages and a declaration that the respondent (Oxlade) of recording their sexual

acts without her knowledge and consent violated her fundamental right to dignity, privacy, and freedom

from discrimination guaranteed under sections 34 and 37 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and

Articles 5 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights (Ratification and Enforcement), Act, Cap.

A9, LFN, 2004.

When the matter was brought up to the judge as filed by the claimant, Blessing. The judge condemned

the singer’s action, stating that;

“The action and attitude of the respondent (Oxlade), who is said to be a celebrity, is despicable,

horrendous, distasteful and classless. The respondent is admonished strongly to act with utmost

circumspection in his relationship with fellow humans, especially the opposite sex. What goes around

comes around. I need not say more,”
