Wizkid and Tems the only artists winning awards. They are both popularly known Nigerian singers, songwriters and performers. They both have thousands of fan bases both nationally and internationally. Tems came to the limelight after Wizkid featured her in his hit single ‘Essence’.
The song was a smash hit because it went so viral reaching different countries. Meanwhile, celebrities, as well as fans, jammed Essence on repeat, to the point that Justin asked to be featured. Which also doubled up the reach ‘Essence’ had. It maintained the number-one spot on multiple streaming platforms. this could be the reason the fan enquired about Wizkid and Tems being the only artists winning awards.
Tems after gaining recognition, went on to bigger things. The sensational singer won her first Grammy alongside American Rapper Future on the song ‘WAIT ON U’. Additionally, Rihanna gave Tems accolades for her pen game, after writing a song for her which was also a hit. Tems has become a household name abroad, some people seem to forget she’s Nigerian sometimes.
A concerned fan who noticed how Tems and Wizkid win awards back to back asked an important question. “Na only Wizkid and Tems dey win international Awards, you would think they’re the only Afrobeats artistes we’ve got”.
This came after Wizkid and Tems were announced winners of the 2023 iHeartRadio Music Awards. They both won the category of “Afrobeat Artist of the Year”. The win was due to the fact that ‘Essence’ was the biggest song on U.S. radio in 2022. Wizkid was also the most-played African artist on urban and R&B radio.
